The Andrew F. Pratt Memorial Scholarship for First Generation College Achievers
Andrew (Andy) F. Pratt was a steadfast believer in hope and second chances for wayward teens – because it mirrored his own life. After teenage missteps led him to drop out of high school, he experienced a turning point that compelled him to do better. He returned to school, and later graduated from the University of Washington in 1993 with a degree in microbiology. When cancer shattered his world in 2023, Andrew met the fight head-on. During a period of remission, he became determined to give back to his community. He began training as an EMT, with the goal of becoming a volunteer firefighter. When the cancer returned, his plans to become a firefighter were no longer possible, but Andrew refused to abandon his commitment to service. He pressed on with his EMT training, studying at times with a chemotherapy drip in his vein and attending class when most people would have stayed in bed. True to form, he excelled. One of the final achievements of his life was completing his training, earning his EMT license, and serving as a volunteer with the Ketchum Fire Department. This scholarship is for a graduating senior who will be a first-generation college student.
