Everyday, at the end of the day, my class and I gather in a circle on the floor to begin our “Pow-Wow” routine. Pow-Wow is a ten minute routine at the end of the day for all students to practice our Mindfulness activity for the week and to discuss our Highs and Lows. We work on our empathy skills and becoming a “thinking of others” kid. This has become a cherished time for students from year to year.
Unfortunately, with having only 10 minutes at the end of the day to form a circle with 22 students you may see how the simple act of forming the circle may take time away from Pow-Wow.
I would appreciate having a large area rug to have students find their spot on the rim of the rug, quickly and efficiently to help begin Pow-Wow promptly. If I were to have an area rug I would use it for more things than just assembling kids for Pow-Wow. We could have story time on the rug with a more defined area in the classroom and students would have a place for AR reading as well. Plus, I have chosen a multicultural themed rug with a map of the continents. In third grade we begin studying other cultures and learning about continents and oceans. As you may see, this area rug will also help reinforce our social studies lessons throughout the year.
